Marcella's Journey: Healing Her Body, Then Her Heart

Marcella, a 5–6-year-old German Shepherd, came heartbreakingly close to losing her life because of a severe injury that should have been treated, not punished.

She arrived at a kill shelter with a large, untreated gash on her leg after being surrendered instead of receiving veterinary care. With only days left, she was placed on the euthanasia list.

Thankfully, she was given a second chance.

The first priority was treating Marcella's physical injuries. She underwent surgery to repair the large wound on her leg and has been recovering well.

But as her body began to heal, another challenge became clear.

We believe Marcella spent much of her life living outside as a guard dog, with little opportunity to build positive relationships with people. Because of that, she is fearful and reactive toward humans.

Rather than giving up on her, we've committed to helping her heal in every way possible.

Marcella is now in professional behavioral training, where experienced trainers are helping her build confidence, reduce fear, and learn that people can be a source of safety instead of something to fear.

Recovery doesn't always end when the stitches come out.

Sometimes the deepest wounds are the ones we cannot see.

Marcella still has a journey ahead of her, but she no longer has to face it alone.
