Hugo’s Life Was Almost Taken… Over a Cold
Hugo’s story is one that highlights both the urgency of rescue and the systemic issues that continue to put adoptable dogs at risk.
Hugo, a 3-year-old Husky Shepherd mix, found himself on the euthanasia list at a Southern California shelter. The reason given was that he had a cold and was “declining fast.” The shelter informed us that they could not grant an extension, leaving us with no time to properly secure a foster or arrange safe transport.
We were placed in an impossible position.
Without additional time, Hugo’s life would have been cut short. The only option left was to involve an attorney to ensure Hugo’s safety, even if only for one more day.
That single day made all the difference.
With legal intervention, we were able to hold off euthanasia long enough to pull Hugo from the shelter. Once he was out and seen by a veterinarian, the truth became clear.
Hugo was not in critical condition.
His cold was already improving, and there was no medical reason that justified the urgency of the shelter’s decision.
This situation raises serious concerns. The use of minor, treatable conditions as justification for euthanasia not only puts dogs at unnecessary risk but also creates pressure on rescues to act without proper preparation.
What happened to Hugo goes against the intent of the Hayden Act, which requires shelters to allow rescues the opportunity to step in and save animals.
Without intervention, Hugo would not be alive today.
Today, Hugo is safe. He is recovering, receiving proper care, and showing his true nature.
He is:
Gentle
Well-mannered
Approximately 3 years old
A Husky Shepherd mix
Once he has fully recovered and is neutered, Hugo will be available for adoption.
Hugo’s story is not an isolated case.
There are many dogs like him who depend on accountability and advocacy to survive.
We encourage you to take action:
Contact your local council member
Reach out to your mayor
Write to your senator
Ask them to ensure shelters are following the Hayden Act and providing rescues the opportunity to save these animals.
No adoptable dog should lose their life simply because it is easier for a system to move quickly.
Can You Be Hugo’s Forever Home?
Hugo has been given a second chance.
Now he is waiting for the final piece — a home where he will be loved, safe, and never at risk again.
If you are open to adopting Hugo, we would love to hear from you.
